Christianity 2.0.8: Parenting Spiritual Champions

Preface to Christianity 2.0

For the first 7 posts of this topic, I have focused on what I perceive is the current problem with Christianity and why we (Christians) are being the subject of increased attacks and skepticism especially from the younger generations.

Next, we will look at some real world statistics on parents who have raised Spiritual Champions.  By this, I mean children who are now adults and consider themselves active, saved Christians who are still working on spiritual growth as young adults or parents themselves.

Traits of Parents Who Have Raised Spiritual Champions:

Cross

1. Parenting is their primary job.

Parents of spiritual champions took parenting very seriously and realized that raising children was the most significant contribution they would ever make to society.  More than their jobs, their hobbies or their sports leagues.  Many times this conflicts with other friends or societies views as our society puts a high value on career advancement or academic progression.  These parents often stand out from the crowd and make personal life sacrifices that enhance their abilities to be better parents.

2. Parents are Life Coaches.

Parents of spiritual champions realized that a majority of what their children would learn about life would be taught in the home and from their parents example.  In knowing this, the parents took an active role in being a Life Coach for their children.  Often times contradicting society or the medias portrayal of norms and values, these parents set a real life example of a productive member of society and took an active role in shaping their children's worldviews.

3. Soci-economic factors had no bearing on results.

Parents of spiritual champions did not let financial standings impede their ability to parent effectively.  Many of these households are single income households with one parents taking the role as primary care-giver.  Not because of ignorance or lack of education but the fact that the parents realized that having one parent in a constant Life Coach role was more beneficial to raising their children. Money was not a factor in their outcome.

4. Put First Things First.

As Stephen Covey taught us, these parents got their priorities straight. In modernEvobloglogo society, these parents are often frowned upon. Many Double Income parents have to outsource their parenting roles to teachers, coaches and the church and then cry foul on these institutions when their children have problems.  Parents of spiritual champions realize that their childrens education in academics, faith and morals and values is the priority of the parents and not any other institution.

These parents also focus on spending as much time with their children as possible.  This is contrary to many parents who work long hours then try to "buy" back quality time on weekends or by buying their children whatever they want in an attempt to make up for time lost because of work or other priorities in the parents life.

Parents of spiritual champions also balance their childrens time differently.  They focus on faith and core values first then academics, sports and extracurricular activities and social lives.  73% of modern day parents place their children's time in exactly the opposite with little to no evidence that placing a high priority on academics or sports and extracurricular activities will yield positive results. See The Success Illusion for a better explanation.

Lastly, parents of spiritual champions put first things first by openly discussing problems and faith issues as a family.  They look for everyday examples as an opportunity to talk and teach about faith and life values.

5. Genuine Relationships.

Parents of spiritual champions are not like the parents portrayed in the latest movies or sitcoms. Meaning they have a hands off approach and only show up at opportune times.  Parents of spiritual champions seek to have a Mentor-Friend relationship with their children while maintaining their authority as a parent.  They have real conversations on life, morals and faith with their children and average 90-120 minutes of personal time with their children each day.  The national average for parents in the U.S. is 15 minutes of personal time with their children per day.

6. Intentional Spiritual Growth.

Faith Parents of spiritual champions have measurable goals and benchmarks for their children and also set the example by continuing in their own spiritual journey and growth during their chidrens' lives.  The parents pray, read the Bible, attend seminars and lectures and look for opportunities to live and teach Christianity by their example to their children.  Many now adult spiritual champions said this was a big factor in their own choice to continue their faith and spiritual growth.

These may be six simple truths but they take a lifetime to hone and live up to.  Legacy Dad tries to take these truths and package them into a customizable roadmap for raising spiritual champions.

To end this post I also offer some caution.  While parenting should be a priority in a couples life, it is not the number one priority.  I have seen many couples try to do this and then the marriage ends because the focus shifted from the marriage to the children.  In my opinion the priorities should be faith, marriage, children.

To finish up Christianity 2009, we will discuss further some parenting techniques for raising spiritual champions and give some real world examples of how to implement this into your current parenting style.

Part 9

Revolutionary Parenting: Raising Your Kids to Become Spiritual Champions

How can parents make a lasting impact in the spiritual lives of their children? To find the answer, acclaimed researcher George Barna investigated the lives of thriving adult Christians and discovered the essential steps their parents took to shape their spiritual lives in childhood. He also learned surprising truths about which popular parenting tactics just aren’t working. Revolutionary Parenting goes beyond youth group and Sunday school and shows parents how to instill in their children a vibrant commitment to Christ.

Transforming Children Into Spiritual Champions: Why Children Should Be Your Church's #1 Priority

No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children's moral development can be deadly. But few parents and church leaders realize how critical it is to start developing a child's biblical worldview in the earliest years of life. The problem is complex: parents who themselves did not receive early spiritual training leave their children's training to the church. Yet the church often focuses on older children- not realizing that a child's moral development is set by the age of nine. The answer is for churches to recognize the need to come alongside parents to provide them biblical worldview training, parenting information, etc., that will equip them to help their children become tomorrow's spiritually mature Church.

Have you ever been robbed?

Have you ever found yourself a victim of a mugging, a crime or has anybody in your life stolen something from you? The result of such a deed would make most of us think that justice needs to be served. That some re-compensation has to be made for the victims in the situation. Let's think about some of these Ponzi schemes that we see all over the papers varying from the US to Europe to Asia. Millions upon millions of dollars have been stolen and never to be returned, yet when we put this in perspective of what is man's and what is God's, the argument really seems kind of silly doesn't it?

Do we rob God of what is rightfully his? Doesn't God own everything in the heavens and the earth? When Abraham rescued Lot he was met by the King of Salem, Melchizedek, and was blessed by this High Priest of God and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. When the King of Sodom saw this, he asked Abraham to give him the persons and keep the goods for himself, but Abraham said, "I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most HIgh, Possessor of Heaven and earth." (Genesis Chapter 14). No questions asked, no justifying himself to the God of Heaven and earth, Abraham did not hesitate and gave 10% of it all to God.

Who is this King of Salem, Melchizedek_picture Melchizedek, that Abraham would give him a tithe? Theologians still argue this point to whether He was Jesus or a truly a King of Peace, but no one debates that either man was a High Priest of God. Jesus Christ came to this earth for you and I and paid the ultimate price for our salvation - his death and resurrection. God bought us with a price (his Son) yet for some of us that is not good enough, some still rob him.

At this point, you may say what if they don't have money, what if they lost their job, what if we don't understand their circumstance - I say let's put this in perspective: Abraham DID NOT HESITATE and he gave 10% of everything and what happened next - GOD BLESSED ABRAHAM! For some people it may never be an issue of money, but rather, time. Some may find that they are too busy to devote themselves to God (Reading the Bible, Praying, Quiet Time, Attending church faithfully, discipling others, becoming mature Christians in which we can decipher good from evil instantaneously...). Whatever the case may be they rob God of time and money and precious resources. The Spirit of God blesses us with talents (spiritual gifts) and we are to use them to the best of our ability, yet, some of us don't. Why not? Why do we move through this life trying to create wealth and security here on earth and build up our earthly treasures yet we have a less priority to build up treasure in Heaven?

I struggle with this because I wonder what more I can be doing? What more can I do to serve? Am I living God's will for my life or am I robbing God of what is rightfully His? I don't have the answer to this, but what I can do is move closer to reading his word, praying more and serving with a joyful heart, and continue to tithe faithfully no matter what that looks like. What do you think?

Worship - not just a place to gather

Holy-prayer Sunday Morning's, if this is the time for you to prepare your hearts to Worship should be a start of a glorious morning. Let me ask you this question, are you going to church to be entertained by great worship music and exciting preaching and fun and clean programs for your children or are you going to church to give God the praise and worship he so rightly deserves.  After all, do you not know that your body is a temple of God, in which the Holy Spirit dwells.  Do we sanctify ourselves one day a week and then spend the rest of the week defiling it with inputs from shameful images, harmful language, unhealth food and the like?  Let me step back to yesterday, Saturday Morning was a time for our weekly men's bible studay and as I found myself rolling out of bed and struggling to move toward the coffee machine that had already made me hot coffee for my transition to the bible study, I was left breathless by the beautiful morning that God had given us.  The Sun was bright and coming up and there were barely any clouds in the sky.  Twenty-some guys gathered and we read various scriptures on the workman of God.  It was an amazing morning and I could not help but gather myself to give thanks to such an incredible Savior who had mercy on me to save me from my sins.

Whether you attend a mega-church or a small church or a mini-church Rock_church_sanctuary that is held in somone's house or a church that gathes outside, plan on coming to give yourself to worship.  Prepare your hearts and collect your thoughts and when you sit in the pew understand that you are there to give God the worship that He deserves and not the Providence-full  worship/praise that you think you deserve.  He is a Holy God and he wants our full attention and our first fruits.  Outdoor church Can you go and praise like no one else praises and worship like no one else worships and if you serve, serve like no one else is serving.  Do this for God and for no one else and in this you will find true worship.
