Safe Kids Vs. Strong Kids

I have to apologize, I am getting closer to moving and my posts have become slim.

I recently read the book “Grace Based Parenting” by Dr. Tim Kimmel. In my opinion, it is a home run and greatly resembles the type of parenting model I strive to follow.

Pastor Kimmel explains that sometimes we raise children in a very rigid and strict environment and this often leads to resentment and children “acting” like Christians while in the home but in reality their faith and relationship with God is simply to appease their parents and once the kids leave the home, the faith and relationship with God ends.

I started a discussion on this topic on Crosswalk and quickly learned that unless you read the whole book, it is very easy to misunderstand this concept of parenting or think that being less strict equals having no guidelines or boundaries.

I invite you to listen to a discussion with the author as it explains better than I can his philosophy on parenting: Part 1 and Part 2.

This then lead to a discussion on Condemning the World versus living as Christians in it which also yielded some great discussions and learning.

I want to thank all those who got involved in these discussions, I saw a wide variety of opinions on the subject but one thing is for sure, we all want to raise are children right and are doing the best we can to accomplish this task.

Great News For Us Global Investors

Great news for us Global Investors Here Comes Global Stock-Trading!

I have been slowly learning about global investing over the past few years and I have had some great results and found many opportunities that most never would be able to see.

Some of the best and safest investments and bourses are not traded on the US   indexes; therefore you have to have an alternate way to access them.  Manly through a self-directed Roth IRA.

This step forward is yet another tool for investors to be able to find opportunities any where in the world and also create alternatives while the US dollar continues to fall.

Does God Want Us To Be Rich?

I subscribe to many daily blogs and get their feeds fromGoogle Reader. Each day, I try to scanthrough the daily pickings and find a couple of gems to delve into. This weekend, I ran into this one from FreeMoney Finance it was actually a link to an older article but I think it is stillrelevant.

I subscribe to this same form of thinking. Money is neither good nor evil, people are. A person can do good with wealth or evil withwealth. I choose to build wealth to dogood.

I often here Christians proclaim that “Money is the root ofall evil” usually because they arehaving money problems??

Yet ministry, missions and God’s work requires time andmoney. I’ve said in the past, I willretire early simply to spend my time doing God’s work, free of charge for the charitiesin need and to teach others how to do the same.

The article also mentions the book Money, Possessions, and Eternity although I have notread it, it seems like a good read. Ilove one of the comments by a reader: “moneyeither supports your commitment to Jesus or obstructs it.

So true, it is our choice.

The Power of One: Amazing Alex

Many times in life we feel like we are insignificant “What difference can I make?” “Who would listen to me?”When I feel like this I always re-read the Story of Alexandra “Alex” Scott. This little girl, without the resources, college degrees and years of experience most adults have started a Legacy to help others. Alex_1

Through her efforts, she has raised millions of dollars and awareness for childhood cancer but more importantly she has inspired others to give. To give of our time, our money and of ourselves for something that betters mankind.

If this was the idea of a little girl with cancer, imagine what we could do if we put our minds, resources and faith together to leave this world a little better. To leave a legacy for all of mankind.

If you notice the link under my bookstore, all proceeds from Legacy Dad Books goes to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. I have been giving to this charity for the past 2 years and using Alex’s story as an example to my children of how one person can change the world.

Shiver My Timbers

I tell you, it has been busy around here and I have beengetting behind in my writing. Oh well…

A month ago we had our Son’s 8th birthday party here. Usually he invites his whole class and we endup having some 40 kids, parents and siblings running around our house. I was relived this year when Chancellorproclaimed he wanted a simple “Boys only sleepover”

At first I was relived, “Ah, a few boys at the house, simple.” Wait a minute 7 Eight year oldboys running around my house full of energy and hopped up on cake andsoda???

I quickly devised my “Legacy Dad” plan…

Our son has been really into pirates and the whole JackSparrow/Pirates of the
Caribbean thing, so hewanted a pirate birthday. My thought wasgreat, let’s have a treasure hunt. Wherewe live in Italy is out on farm land, we are on a one lane road that is flanked by fields on allsides. We also have a river runningthrough our yard and around our neighborhood.

So I devised a plan to have the boys run around in the nightwith a compass and flash lights going from point to point (lit by chemlights)and then ultimately finding the treasure (A large box wrapped in Gold andfilled with candy and prizes)

To add to the aura, the fog is thick in Italy atnight and this would create a spooky look that would keep a bunch of 8 yearolds a little paranoid and also make them feel adventurous.

So at about 8:00 PM, after watching Pirates of the Caribbean 2, the boys grabbed a pile of fake swords andsabers and ventured out into the foggy Italian night. I gave a quick class on shooting azimuths ona compass and walking a pace count and off we went. After about 45 minutes of running through theItalian countryside, the boys found the chest buried under a pile of leaves andwood.

They hoisted it on their shouldersand carried the “booty” back to their Pirate Ship. They ran in the house and ate candy andplayed with the prizes until all hours of the night.

The best part was as the boys were leaving the next morning, many told my son that this was the best party ever and the treasure hunt wasawesome. A proud Legacy Dad just drankhis coffee and smiled smugly.

Mission accomplished.
